I've recently been on a "Breakfast At Tiffany's" kick, and I remembered seeing that RCA Victor had the rights to record the show because they had funded the show considerably, but they scrapped the recording when the show closed. RCA had intended to record Bert Lahr's Tony winning performance in 1964's "Foxy" as well, but that also didn't happen.
What other shows do you know that went unrecorded?
I'm not talking about shows that simply weren't recorded like , but rather shows that were scheduled to be recorded but never were for one reason or another.

I also love Breakfast at Tiffany's. When the show closed, they recorded some of the numbers live and released them onto vinyl through SPM Records. It was deemed as the original cast recording, but not many were released and I guess the vinyl is pretty hard to find. There's also the studio cast recording with Faith Prince as Holly that features numbers from the Boston and Philadelphia tryouts as well as the Broadway production. Pretty neat!
I think at one point I read that the original cast of Carrie was rumored to reunite in the early 1990s to record a cast album, but obviously it never happened and I don't even know how much truth is in that.

Arguably the most famous example of the modern era is Lestat.
Elton John's musical was recorded, but when the show flopped quickly, Sir Elton pulled the release. The only reason that the album has never been bootlegged and leaked online is that the recording was done, but not mixed or mastered. Only the raw data from the recording session was completed, not any editing work.

Posted: 8/23/13 at 8:32pmMy understanding of the Breakfast at Tiffany's OBC LP release is, rather than the producers recording the show live, it's an audience bootleg. Same as Foxy and Her First Roman, another show with a cast album deal that fell through when it shuttered.

Neither Dude or Rockabye were cast albums
Rockabye was 10 songs for a score of about 40 & Dude were 2 separate albums (Dude & Salome Bey album) & nwither was a cast album
Her First Roman was recorded some 25 plus years after the show closed.

Posted: 8/23/13 at 11:36pmDude was sort of a cast album. It contains songs from the show sung by the cast.

The "Dude" recording with the cast members is basically a truncated cast album. The arrangements and orchestrations are mostly all from the Broadway version. Some of the songs are reassigned (Nell Carter didn't actually sing "So Long, Dude" in the show, for instance) but what's there is about 1/3 of the show how it sounded at the Broadway Theatre. It's in a completely different order, but it ultimately makes very little difference (I say as someone who honestly loves the score with my whole heart.)
The earlier "Salome Bey Sings Songs From Dude" album is less like the stage version, and the tracks are more demo-like. "Via Galactica", however, is the Galt MacDermot show most conspicuously unrecorded. There's an instrumental album but the arrangements are nothing at all like the show orchestrations and even as a rabid Galt MacDermot fan, I can't say I much enjoy that LP.
There also was no album for the never-officially-opened "Rachael Lily Rosenbloom", despite the title page of the program saying that the cast album was available on RSO Records.

tazber,
I was referring to the plans RCA Victor had to record the show in the studio for a release coinciding with the Broadway production in 1966, not the 1990's studio cast recording.
chrisampm2,
I had never heard before that "Her First Roman" had a cast album deal, do you happen to know what label planned to record it?

I have both the Dude and Via Galactica recording. And, I saw both shows. The Dude recording although different, is sort of representative of the live production. Via Galactica is not. I have looked for a bootleg recording taken from the sound booth, but I have been unsuccessful so far.
Both shows were a disaster on stage although I remember them both fondly. Well, except the ridiculous cones on top of the main characters in the first scenes of Via Galactica. The trampolines were fun.
Dude was also interesting. The theater design was so unique and I remember the cast being extremely enthusiastic and fun to watch.
