U.S. DVD players are "locked" by the factory so that they will only recognize Region 1 (US & Canada) DVDS.

However, many many players can be "unlocked" with a simple one-time entry on the remote so that they will play DVDs from anywhere. It opens up a whole new world of DVDs.

Here's two of the least-expensive players than can be converted to multi-region in about ten seconds:
