Urinetown - Informal Review Now Added

I'm seeing a production of this at Signature theatre next week. (w00t! Urinetown - Informal Review Now Added ) Should I listen to/buy the CD first? Is it better to be surprised or are the lyrics so clever I should buy it? I'm so excited!

re: Urinetown

Definatley buy it! ( I've been listening to it all day today!)

re: Urinetown

My advice would be to go in without having heard it. I remember my first visit to "Urinetown" on Broadway not knowing a note - one of my favorite afternoons in the theatre. Enjoy! I'd love to go see that production myself... the director, Joe Calarco, does brilliant work. Be sure to tell us how it was!

re: Urinetown

For Urinetown I always say go in not knowing it. Part of the genius of it is when you first see/hear it.
And hang on, when did you win the discus?

re: Urinetown

Def. dont get it- I agree. I know when I don't know a score to a show I see, I pay attention more to the lyrics- I am more focused and involved with the musical.

When I saw it on Broadway, I bought the CD immediately afterwards, and listened to it non-stop for almost a week!

re: Urinetown

haha I still listen to it nonstop.
And hang on, when did you win the discus?

re: Urinetown

Everyone seems to have a different opinion, because I always like to buy and listen to the cast recording before I see a show so I know what to expect. Urinetown is a great show though and I'm sure you'll like it either way!

re: Urinetown

I LOVE Urinetown. Is there a full cast list for the Signature production? I can't find one.

re: Urinetown

I saw this last night - front row!!! Absolutely brilliant in the absurdest way! Signature really knows how to chose their shows, because the stage is smaller and more intimate than one in a Broadway theatre, whcih probably works better for a show like this. I went in without hearing muhc of the music. The cast was all top-notch. Perhaps a more detailed review later.

PS: Can I PLEASE play Little Sally some day?!?

re: Urinetown

I am really tempted to see the Signature production. Urinetown is my "top 3" of shows, but I did not want to mess with my memories of great experiences seeing it with some of the original cast members. DC really has some great local professional theatre though.

re: Urinetown

Anyone in Norhern Illinois area can come see my colleges production of it next year: April 27-30. My school puts on fantastic shows, we have some great people, amazing costumes, and amazing sets! They already cast a few of the leads (it's part of a "senior seminar" thing we do) so my extremely talented friends are Hope, Pennywise, and Lockstock...I could be in it..but I'm in London re: Urinetown

just a heads up...

I wish I could see this one..re: Urinetown

re: Urinetown

I am seeing it at the Signature in a couple of weeks. I would love to hear what other people think of the production, so please, post your "reviews"!

Thanks, Bill63, for posting the cast list. I can imagine some of those folks being perfect in their roles (like Will Gartshore). Wish Donna Migliacci wasn't Pennywise though.

I LOVED the Broadway production, too, and saw it multiple times. I cherish my Urinetown bottled water and the roll of toilet paper autographed by the entire cast...and, of course, my bunny puppet.

I agree with everyone who said, "Don't listen to the CD until you see the show." It will spoil a lot of the elements of surprise. Afterwards, you won't be able to stop listening to it either.

For those of you unfamiliar with it, the Signature is well-known for staging off-beat musicals. They did a production of Side Show a couple of years ago that was sensational. (Sherry Edelen was one of the sisters.) Not all of their productions are as successful, but they have a good batting average.

I can't wait to see it!

re: Urinetown

This show has one of the most addicting scores in recent memory. I saw it multiple times in New York and listen to the cast recording every other day. I would love to see the Signature production, but, alas, it's not possible.

re: Urinetown

LOVE Urinetown. I bought the CD at intermission when I saw the show on Broadway.

Though I often see shows before I know the lyrics, I find that knowing the score does enhance my experience.

CU's Informal Review

The stage is so perfect for this show! I must say being front row was exhilarating – I still have my “I Heart Freedom” Poster. The show choice is wonderful for Signature, intimate, close and with a wonderful ensemble cast.

Will Gartshore and Erin Driscoll have adorable comic chemistry Bobby Strong and Hope Cladwell. His facial expressions are terrific and he’s got quite a voice! (And he's just so cute-stage presence included!) Erin Driscoll is hilarious – she uses this helium pitched voice and very damsel-in-distress mannerisms, which work beautifully. She reminded me of one of those heroines that was tied to the railroad tracks waiting to be saved by her hero. I am fully aware that this is a farce, but any show needs the least bit of a heart to succeed and while mostly funny, I feel like there could have been an ounce more seriousness when witnessing Bobby and Hope’s love for each other.

Stephen Schmidt as Officer Lockstock was show-stealing. His presence and delivery incredible, as was his comic timing. His voice boomed and his deviousness was perfection. (My personal favorite). Christopher Bloch as Cladwell B Caldwell is wonderfully sleazy, but I feel like he could’ve been more devious. Personally, I felt like Lockstock was more devious that Caldwell and the minion should not be more villainous than the master. I don’t want this to be mistaken – he was great – just not amazing.

Jenna Sokolowski was very cute as Little Sally, but I would have played the role a bit more like those little kids who keep asking questions. Though, Sokolowski was so endearing and heart-winning, so no major complaints.

Donna Migliaccio (did I get it right? CU's Informal Review was a very funny Pennywise – she took “Privilege to Pee” and sung it with such a heart – she is a true comedian, because as a rule a comedian cannot look like they know hteir material is funny. The chemistry between her and Cladwell is so bizarre, but like most of the show itself, it works.

The ensemble is wonderful! Ever since I saw “Signature Sing Broadway in Ballston”, I must admit to having a little crush on the ever-talented Evan Casey, who played Tiny Tom. He does not disappoint and I think epitomizes the “No small parts” rule, as do Sherri Edelen and Thomas Adrian Simpson – Becky Two Shoes and Senator Fipp, respectively. Edelen just has such a magnificent presence, and her and Steven Cupo (Hot Blades Harry) were a dynamic pair on “Snuff that Girl.” Simpson was larger-than-life and terrifically oily – just loved watching him whenever he was onstage!

This was a fabulous night of theatre!!! I performed in a Brecht piece a few years ago, so that was wonderful for me to see the similarities. If you have the opportunity – go! “It’s a Privilege” to see this production!!!

CU's Informal Review

I was at this performance on Sunday as well. Being a huge fan of the Broadway production and the original cast, I was a bit worried what to expect, but it was really great! The cast was very talented, and the costumes and sets were perfect. How funny were all the "get your head out of the clouds"? Will Gartshore really impressed me.

CU's Informal Review

I saw Urinetown at the Signature theater this past Sunday and was VERY impressed.

I never saw it when it was on Broadway, and was excited that I had the opportunity to see it now.

I loved it!!!!!! I'm definitely going to see Into the Woods when it comes to the Sig.

CU's Informal Review

Saw the Sunday matinee. Erin Driscoll, playing the ingenue who steals the hero's heart, is a knock-out. She will be taking over the role of Glinda one day. Will Gartshore is always great. The wonderful Sherry Edelen should have been Little Sally.

The Senator Fipp character was portayed much more mutli-dimensionally by Thomas Adrian Simpson than the guy on Broadway. Simpson's Fipp was maniacal and a tad off-balance the way Dr. Strangelove is...in fact, he LOOKED like Dr. Strangelove.

Christopher Bloch as Cladwell was the sleazist of all megalomaniacs: appearing naive, sensitive even, in one flash and utterly deranged in another. I hate to admit it but Donna Maggliachio did do a better Pennywise that I would have...except she looked too sexy, even dressed in slop clothes. (You go, girl!)

I do think that the actors at Signature played the show as though it were broad comedy, while in the original, the characters played it absurdly yet seriously and subtly. This evoked compassion for the characters. They didn't seem "in on the joke."

But in the Signature production, it seemed as though all of the characters were making fun of themselves pretty regularly. I guess it's a directorial choice.

Nothing will ever compare to the original Broadway cast, but I can't imagine anyone coming closer than Signature.
