So what do we think will happen to Urinetown when Henry Miller closes for renovations? Close? Move houses? Apparently tickets are not being sold past February 1. It would be a shame if it closed, I think...it still seems to be doing well $ wise.

Tickets are not being sold past February because they don't have a theatre. Can't sell what you don't have.
Sit tight. If they move it, they still will have to get through the tradtional Jan-Feb slump.
My hunch is that there will be 1-6 suitable houses available by New Years. Some of these houses would be quite happy to get a transfer. This will give some options.
How about the Belasco? SIX DANCE LESSONS should be closing in six weeks.

Yes I know why tickets aren't being sold past 2/1. They're out of Henry Miller on the 15th. It was just emphasizing that they don't have plans for another theater yet. If they had another theater lined up, they might be selling spring tickets. I'm glad the theater's getting spruced up though. Anyone know how long the renovs should take?
Could be a while. Aren't they also gonna build a skyscraper?

Yeah...that's what I heard at least. Office space? Residential?
It might be the new Bank of America headquarters.

I have heard its a LOT more than a 'spruce'. For starters the theatre will be moved somewhere else on the site like the Empire was moved a few hundred feet down 42nd Street in the mid-90s. It also may be a case of saving the landmarked front wall and ditching the rest of the theatre. The office building surrounding the theatre won't be done until 2008.
Even in its heyday the Miller was not sought after because it had a small orchestra and a comparatively large second balcony. Those factors combined with its east of Bway and on 43rd St location made it less than desireable.
All of the East of Bway houses except the Lyceum have been something else since 1970 at one point or another: Hudson and Miller were used as porn movie houses, the Miller later became Xenon, a disco hence the flat orchestra floor, the Cort was a TV studio in the late 60s-early 70s when Merv Griffin had a CBS late night talk show, the Playhouse, Ziegfeld and 54th Street were torn down.

I would be very surprised if they moved URINETOWN. It hasn't sold out its tiny theater in a long time. To move it would cost a lot and it just made its investment back. Even without rave reviews, I think WICKED, BOY FROM OZ and TABOO will run for some time. If it looked like they would all be gone by the end of the year, then it might make sense to gamble on moving URINETOWN.
I already posted this on another thread. Urinetown WILL NOT BE MOVING. It will close by February 15th. Trust me. I have connections.
