I was browsing wikipedia and was reading the article about Disney Theatrical. Here's the blurb about "Little Mermaid."
I find it interesting. I'm wondering where that idea about Pat Carrol came from? The Blurb follows below:
The Little Mermaid
The show is currently being re-worked and adapted from the memorable movie of the same name. The Broadway debut is anticipated to be 2007 at the earliest, but most likely 2008. So far, the only cast member from the original movie confirmed to star in the Broadway adaption is Pat Carroll, the voice of Ursula, who will perform the voice of the Ursula puppet.

totally not true...
the demo has some amazing new songs for the character...it would be horrible as a puppet....and why would they have Kaitlin Hopkins be Ursula on the demo if they knew they would have Pat? and isn't she a little to old? she was born in 1927...I'm thinking she couldn't sing the role anymore...unless they prerecorded it...
sorry I'm babbling now...
point is..wikepedia is crap.

It would be interesting if she were seated or standing in a central "body" and had puppeteers controlling the eight legs that would extend out from beneath/behind/around her while she sang and did stuff as the body.
They would have to do that. Ursula is supposed to be all about the flowing tentacles around her. You can't just put her in a costume and have her run around like that. OR it would be a challenge at least.
And I'm sure they are going to have a million puppets! All those fish and stuff are going to have to be floating around and moving in big dance numbers. I think puppets would be really beautiful in the underwater scenes.
