So I asked Donna Vivino a question during one of her "q&a" thing on Twitter. I asked what book would she love to see as a musical, and that I've always wanted Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray come to the stage (Becky Sharp = sass). She said that "Vanity Fair as actually in development many years ago as a musical".
Can anyone tell me what happened and when this happened? Any information at all?
The first time I read Vanity Fair I automatically assumed there would be a musical form of it (and I wasn't really aware of musicals at that time to begin with).
For some reason, all I can see is Laura Benanti or Annaleigh Ashford as Becky Sharp and Celia Keenan-Bolger
as Amelia Sedley.

There was a London musical of Vanity Fair in 1962 with a score by Julian Slade and Robin Miller. A later concert version of the score was recorded.
