Varla Jean Merman as Mary Sunshine

I was watching the movie Girls Will Be Girls again yesterday (FABULOUS movie, if you havent seen it...get ur ass to Blockbuster now!) and Jeffrey Robertson, better known as nationally famous drag performer Varla Jean Merman has an AMAZING operatic voice. He would be awesome vocally as well as hysterically funny in the role of Mary Sunshine on Broadway!

Somebody hire this girl! She after all does have showbiz in her blood, being the illegitimate daughter of Ethel Merman!

Anyone else familiar with her/have any thoughts? She's a delight in live performances and a doll to talk to!

Varla Jean's hilarious and has a great voice. She probably could handle Mary Sunshine without too much effort.

Okay, one of the funniest movies EVER! (you can't Rent it, you have to OWN IT!)I love Varla. Have you heard her song "I want a hug?" It is HISTERICAL! There is this great video from when she was on the tour of Chicago (playing Mary Sunshine) and it was playing in Japan. See VARLA is enormously tall. So the video shows her walking in full drag through the airport in Japan and everyone around her is signifigantly shorter. It is histerical.

I'm not sure. I don't even remember where I saw it. I can't wait to be on the drag scene with Varla next summer in PTown.

Amazingly enough, years ago Varla auditioned (several times) and was turned down for the role. Then JR lost weight, and perhaps didn't feel as Mary Sunshine in/out as before. He/she doesn't need CHICAGO anymore, and does well wherever he takes his own stuff. I remember Varla fondly from the old "88's" days, when Varla performed the Lesbian of the Week.
