Why do the shows at Vegas have to be trimmed to 90 or so mins from their Broadway counterparts? I am assuming that the theater-lite experience is about as much culture as the Vegas crowd can cope with in a lifetime before they climb back to their overly illuminated trailer parks. Or maybe they are unable to concentrate for longer than that time before the gambling addiction kicks in? Either way, I'd love to know the real reason.
It comes down to the mighty dollar. Casinos calculate how much money the can garnre/lose per minute, which is why the 90-minute rule is in effect. The longer you are inside of a theatre, the more money they are losing in table games, slots, and restaurant profits. The Broadway shows here in Vegas have to be 90-minutes in order to fit in the odd amount of shows done per week. Sometimes upward of 12 shows/week. At the end of the day it has nothing to do with the art of it, but the business of it all.
