Very Brief Thoughts on In A Dark Dark House

Another churned out LaBute play. For once, there are just too many twists, which puts the story beyond the realm of reality. Banal and pointless dialogue, all around another (mostly) predictable story, which I had pegged early into the 2nd scene. I will say the ending surprised me, but, in thinking about it, the clues were there.

As far as the cast, Louisa Krause dominates her one scene. A Kate Hudson look alike, she could have a big future in the NY theater scene. Fred Weller is always great (and is, IMO, the best young male actor today), and Ron Livingston, when you could hear him, was servicable, at best.

Part of the problem is Carolyn Cantor's bland direction, which, much like Blakemore's staging of Deuce, leaves the characters sitting or standing aimlessly for way too long.

Open letter to Mr. LaBute - get some sleep. Come up with an idea that's better than something we can watch for free on Law and Order.
