yah i think they should record a professional recording of the original casts and keep it in the vault. otherwise we get last cast recordings of Jekyl and Hyde with Hasselhoff instead of Cucciolo, or Toni Braxton for Aida, instead of Tony Award Winner Heather Headley! ![]()
Then if they decide to release it years down the road when the show's closed we all have a copy of how the show was original supposed to be seen, lol :)

Posted: 6/27/03 at 3:44pmyeah, they should definitely record the original casts of some shows.

Posted: 6/27/03 at 5:29pmPhantess, you took the words right out of my mouth! I was a little hesitant to post that because of the unpopularity of DOTV, but boy would I have been a happy camper if they had taped it!

Posted: 6/27/03 at 5:36pmDefinitely! And nobody is saying sell them while the show is going on, but absolutely once the show is finished. I love that I have "Into the Woods", "Sunday In The Park With George", "Fosse", and "Putting It Together"....I was actually there the day they taped it...Carol's skirt really did fall down by accident LOL on tapes and DVD's. Plus, I was too young to have seen SITPWG in person; so I'm so glad it was recorded. Shows today should be saved for future Broadway fanatic generations.

The Into the Woods revival would have been awesome on DVD.
I heart my Putting it Together DVD. John was soooooooo funny how he reacted to Carol's skirt slipping down. He jumped all over. I love "Unworthy of Your Love" and "Country Home". John's voice is amazing as well as Ruthie's.

Absolutely! The Passion DVD is the new highlight of my DVD collection...I also have performance DVDs of Sunday in the Park with George, The Man Who Came to Dinner, and La Bohème. I've heard there will be one for the actual production of Sweeney Todd coming next year, which I also can't wait for.
I'd love to see, say, Rent get a good DVD transfer. Or Cabaret, for that matter (the revival is brilliant, even if the movie is also great film...they're very different).

Posted: 6/28/03 at 6:44amOn the subject of John Barrowman...next week (week of July 7) will see his PBS Evening at Pops Jerry Herman concert airing plus on Sci Fi Channel his recent (and first) feature film Megalodon : Shark Attack 3 (2002) on Sat/Sun July 5-6.

Posted: 6/28/03 at 9:04amHe has such a great voice! I wish he'd start doing more over here! It seems like he's only in British musicals.

Barrowman will be busy in London til the end of the year in the limited run "Anything Goes" transfer (he was wonderful earlier in the year in the National Theater repertory runs of "Anything Goes" and "Love's Labour's Lost" with Joe Fiennes.
And John has just completed a run in England in the new F. Scott Fitzgerald musical, "The Beautiful and the Damned" plus filming the new Cole Porter film musical.
He had lined up several U.S. theater projects for the second half of 2003 but these are now on hold as he continues to work in England. He is pretty much out of the Broadway scene for the next year or so.

Posted: 6/28/03 at 12:35pmI second the idea of the revival of Cabaret being on DVD! It would be an absolutely great idea.

Actually don't they film all of the shows and put them in the Lincoln Center Archives? I wish that they could just release several of the ones that have already closed on Broadway, that would be amazing! To be able to watch shows like Dance of the Vampires, Into the Woods(Revival), and all of the others that everyone has mentioned, gosh that would be GREAT!!!!!!!!!

Posted: 6/28/03 at 4:07pmAs I understand it, Lincoln Center has a video of most shows that have appeared on Broadway. However, they are NOT available to just anyone. You have to have some kind of authorization and a specific reason for wanting to see any partcular show.
#18re: re: re: re: re: re: Videos
Posted: 6/28/03 at 4:18pmThose videos are not available to the great unwashed masses. After all, they only buy the tickets that keeps Broadway alive. To Lincoln center, they do not rate

What if we all start a protest (maybe outside Lincoln Center)!?
1,2,3,4 TV and Movies are a bore!
5,6,7,8 Broadway Shows are simply great!

Count me in.
They (powers that be) have no idea of the potential $$ to be generated by sales of videos of shows after a window of time has elapsed. DOTV lost money. I guarantee they could have sold a lot of videos as people wanted it (whether you hated it or loved it) & would have recouped some of the losses.
Imagine if videos had been made of various versions of "Nick & Nora" It would be a great tool on how to stage a musical & you could see a shows evolution & the final product

Posted: 6/28/03 at 4:39pmI want to have the new Gypsy on a professional DVD more than anything! With commentary (especially from those who worked throughout every revival and the original).

RE Gypsy
It will never happen. Until new blood gets involved in theater, the same tired people will be making the decisions.

It could happen. Considering that Sam Mendes is also a film director, and Bernadette Peters has had two of her shows taped before. Unfourtunately, they're not the ones we have to worry about. It's those old men, set in their ways, hoping to have a revival of the show every 10 years, and therefore will never consider releasing staged versions on tape.

Unfortunately, it also has to do with many union restrictions
For example, before Les Miz closed, they had to cut about 15 minutes so it finished by a certain time. After that time, the producers would have to pay overtime. A creative work is therefore butchered for monetary reasons. I understand the producers need to do it but it is archaic work rules such as this that are a major problem.
