Anybody going? I wish him the best of luck!
Hope Andy is okay!
Well that answers the question I asked this past week as to whether or not Andy Karl has missed a performance. It would be interesting to hear how he did.
Vince was awesome tonight! Really great for only having an afternoon of notice. He nailed everything! At the stage door I heard a cast member say Andy Karl is fine, and that he was just exhausted. Vince also tweeted that tonight may be his only night on, so Karl doesn't seem to be ill, which is great! A terrific cast.
Maybe Andy is just taking the news real hard?

Andy is exhausted. He has been doing the show since February, 8 shows a week plus working out every day beforehand to maintain his stamina and to keep in shape. He started the workouts when he got the job last year. He probably just needed a break. I would imagine the news of the show closing also upset him. He gave 110% to this show day in and day out.
Does Andy usually do 8 shows a week? It seems like a very physical role like that should warrant having an alternate.
^ He does indeed do all 8 shows.
Sounds to me like Andy Karl is a nice guy who wanted to let his understudy go on once before the show closes. Pretty cool move.
I'm not familiar with Production contracts, but I know at the LORT level there's a provision for taking a show off without penalty to allow your understudy to go on.
Sounds like he did a solid for Oddo. No need to be afraid of hurting the box office now. Kudos to Andy and better luck next time.
Deserved a longer run but that is it. The same people crapping all over it would flock to it and rave if Hugh Jackman was doing it. Can you spell hypocrisy boys and girls?
Cannot understand how he can do what has to be the most physical role on Broadway while others need an alternate. If you would have proposed an alternate to Merman you would have been sent home in a body bag and toe tag.

Too bad Rex Reeds review calling Andy the "next Hugh Jackman" didn't help at the box office. Vince or someone else has gone on previously for Andy as this was his 4th callout. This role has taken alot out if him physically even tho he is in great shape.
I'm pretty sure I read a tweet from either Andy Karl or the Broadway Understudies account a few months ago saying that Adrian Aguilar was going on as Rocky. So no, Andy has missed shows before -- but it's pretty rare! Another amazing feat.
