A heads up to those looking for interesting stuff playing off-Broadway, Signature theatre kicks off its Paula Vogel season with her play "The Oldest Profession" starring Marylouise Burke, Anita Gillette, Carlin Glynn, Katherine Helmond and Joyce Van Patten, previewing August 17th and opening September 9th. The play deals with five aging prostitutes dealing with diminishing prospects and clientele on the eve of the Reagan era.
Signature Theatre has come to prominence by dedicating its entire season each year to one playwright (Albee, Miller, Shepard, Guare et al). Vogel is best known for her Pulitzer-prize winning "How I Learned To Drive" which had a long run here starring Mary-Louise Parker a few seasons ago. Her other plays include "Baltimore Waltz," "The Mineola Twins" and last year's acclaimed "The Long Christmas Ride Home" at The Vineyard. She's also a very well respected professor of playwrighting at Brown. Following "The Oldest Profession," Signature will present productions of her Obie-winning "The Baltimore Waltz" and the controversial "Hot 'n Throbbing."

Thanks for the info Margo. I have always enjoyed Katherine Helmond's work. Have to put thatone on the summer rotation list.

Why is it there is never enough money, or enough time off from work? I vote for 3 day weekends all summer.

The University of Iowa does a similar thing each summer for their Rep, several plays or musicals of a single living playwright. It's a great idea!
