I sat through the spare West End production thinking this musical so needs and deserves the full blooded production values that seemed to equip the Broadway production, of which I'd only seen photographs.
My goodness! This is an incredible and outstanding musical. The breadth of its scope, the depth of its vision and the quality of its delivery make it (as already noted) one of the best if not the best musical of the last 20 years: if I were American it would make me proud to be American. It therefore deserves to be produced in such a way as to honour and respect the theatre traditions of the USA, and Broadway inparticular.
Evelyn Nesbitt needs a swing (not a chair). Coalhouse Walker needs a model T (not a projection). You need to see fireworks and explosions without thinking they're weak special effects. Ragtime tells an amazing story incredibly well and that story deserves to be illustrated superbly.

I loved the original staging of RAGTIME, and thought the cast was perfect.
I find it hilarious for that production to be deemed "overproduced," whatever that means, especially when across the street when RAGTIME was playing, one of the most "overproduced" shows of all time, THE LION KING, was roaring along (and bored me to death when I saw it.)
