Wicked is awesome! The entire production design is stunning; sets, costume, hair and make-up. Everything is great. The flying monkeys were insane. And the Wizard too, everything! The songs are gorgeous and the show is clever and funny as hell. There's even a nod to Isaac Mizrahi when Madame Morrible asks Glinda who designed her dress, "Oh, its an Ozic Mizrahi." Its all freakishly good. Kristin Chenoweth is hilarious, providing much of the comic relief, and Idina Menzel is just stunning to watch and her voice is incredible. The entire cast was wonderful, but Wednesday night (and probably every night for that matter) Kristin stole the show. Wicked was over three hours long and from what I heard Wednesday's premiere was the first time they've gotten through the entire show. Its got a ways to go, but Wicked is off to a sensational start. I predict many Tonys come 2004. If you can GO SEE WICKED! Its amazing! It was also taped for PBS so hopefully we'll be able to see it on tv some time relatively soon.

I highly doubt it was filmed to be broadcast. it is still very early in development and hasn't even come to NYC. It was probably for a documentary.

More details please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Glinda's bubble?
More about the monkeys?
When the story 'catchs up' to the plot of the wizard of oz?
Costumes?
effects?
Idina flying on a broom?

details, details, details!!!

I also saw opening night. I have a feeling it was taped for the Lincoln Center Performing Arts Library theatre archives (which recently, more are being broadcast.)

Except for several technical gliches toward the end and also an unnecessay running time of three and a half hours, it holds a lot of promise. Both Kristin and Idina are amazing and receive lots of featured solo time. Stephen Schwartz delivers again with a memorable, pop/rock and also hauntingly beautiful score.

Okay here are the spoilers (represented in my somewhat negative opinion):

Galinda's Bubble is a rust colored flying circle (with additional hoops and circles adorning it's frame) and bubble machines that release continuously during the prologue. And her dress was blue instead of pink...huh.

The monkeys are very accomplished acrobats that scale numerous set pieces but never actually fly. They look a little like something from Clive Barker's imagination with silk wings that kept collapsing.

The story catches up with Wizard of Oz toward the end of act two where sudenly this insightful and touching musical transforms into a fractured fairy tale that would make Frank Baum roll in his grave...oy.

The costumes are phenomenal and like none I have ever seen on the live stage; the hairpieces would make any legitimate drag-queen green with envy.

The effects are sparse and relatively unoriginal and unimpressive(will probably become more spectacular as the show is developed.) There is a metal dragon that looms over the proscenium used during the opening and also the tornado (good to know that fire breathing beasts produce cyclones, right?) There is some good use of projection work. Idina's makeup kept rubbing off on other actors (it's not easy being green).

At the end of act one Idina levitates a broomstick but then never mounts it. She is later flow upward with her massive cloak engulfing the stage (no broom in sight); that was rather impressive (especially when the cast appears from beneath it racing downstage).

If your are interested in more of my biased opinion I will be glad to share, just ask me more. Keep in mind that I saw the very first performance. I'm sure once there has been significant tuning this show will take Broadway and the musical theatre world by storm!

yes, it is always wonderful to follow the journey and transformation of a very BIG new show. What you see at the Curran is only a taste of what wil be on Broadway. Everything is essentially scaled down becasuethe Curran is quite small when compared to the cavernous Gershwin. The producers have said that the sets at the Curran would be like the gershwin sets, only smaller.

I LOVED the novel 'Wicked". Very good reading.

Any good lined?? i read on Kristin's website that there were some good ones. For some reason, I like the line "They're just shows. Get Over It".

i believe they are both classified as leads.

Kristin has said that her role is more of an acting role than a vocal role.

Wicked is being filmed for a documentary about the making of a musical for PBS. It will not be aired for more than a year.
It will not be taped for the Lincoln Center Library until after it is "frozen" That will not be until sometime after previews begin on Broadway. That is the standard procedure for any show that is taped for the library.
It is extremely unlikely the Broadway version of the show will run over 3 hours. The purpose of an out of town try out is just that - to work through the creation of a new show before presenting it to a Broadway audience.
There are plans to add flying to the Broadway version, the Curran Theater however, does not allow flying, that is why it is not utilized in this production.
"good to know that fire breathing beasts produce cyclones, right"
Actually one of the characters in the show claimed responsibility for the cyclone.
