What qualifications does a production have to meet for the direction to be bad. Is the chemistry between the stars off, is the blocking bad, is the director unable to handle intimate book scenes? Is it a bad concept? Or is it all of the above?

I took it that the OP meant staging and not overall direction. Reread and saw they meant direction. I consider staging to be part of directing.

I agree that Doyle's conceit of actors doubling up as musicians is a crutch to mask the reality of his incompetence as a director. We all react differently to things and are only offering our honest reactions to his work here but, at the risk of but not wanting to offend anyone who thinks differently, in my humble opinion, you can write what John Doyle knows about staging and directing on the back of a postage stamp and still have plenty of blank space left.
