Two musical period pieces exploring women trying to pass as white opening at the same time. Gonna be interesting to see what happens.

This coming from a message board troll who thought QUEEN OF VERSAILLES was the second coming of Christ.

Maybe they’re just trying new things to see what works? They can always resort back to the paper mill version. I think my main criticism of the show at paper mill was that the Martha Clarke character needed work. It felt like Mary Clarke’s show as she’s the one who goes on a journey and the sister was just there to get things back on track. I would give her more to do and the romance in her relationship was half baked as opposed to Mary which was pretty well defined. Marrying the white man for a life of luxury.

It was like they left all the parts that needed fixing untouched and messed with everything that made it magical before. I was kinda shocked at the changes as someone who has seen it in all 3 incarnations. I thought the most recent version was the worst yet and it made me sad because I love the material...or I did."
It's awful how often this happens. Exactly what happened to Welch's Gatsby leading up to ART, like a crisis of confidence when the project met its director. It was a tremendous score as written but nearly all of the most memorable hooks and theatrical gestures were cut. (Hopefully that won't be the last word, and it was still certainly a hell of a lot better than whatever is on Broadway is supposed to be.)
