Does it deserve a second chance? It's one of those rare princess show/revue hybrids. Discuss.

The version Peters did, however has been withdrawn. Richard Maltby provided some new lyrics and a more focused throughline. All of that has now been discarded.
The version in use now is a discombobulated mess. I saw the Broadway version, which was far from sublime but at least it made sense. I have seen the current revised edition as well and it does not work at all. The DANCE part I felt never really worked, and the vague attempt to tie the two segments together fails.
So, no. It was in no way ahead of its time. An interesting idea that didn't work.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
