I’m not a fan of his singing voice on the cast albums for Company, Tick Tick Boom, etc. However, when I saw Road Show (his most recent musical theatre performance) I thought he never sounded better. There was more chesty resonance, less nasal. 

And he’s one of the best musical theatre ACTORS we’ve got.

Someone else agrees with me!  He seemed to be sleepwalking through Cabaret when I saw it and I did not like him at all in Company.  That said, I loved him in Speed The Plow and The Homecoming and am happy to tell you he is excellent in plays.
