I could not believe the outfits at Phantom tonight.
The audience was more entertaining then the show.
Although Hugh Panaro has a great voice.
It was hysterical. There were about 8 women dressed in floor gowns that looked like prom dresses.
Very entertaining stuff.
I'm guessing they were die hard Phans, scary...
woooah kay
When I saw the POTO tour in Seattle last year on any regular Tuesday performance in the middle of the run, several people were wearing tuxes, gowns, gloves, tiaras, the whole bit. I thought I'd walked into a prom! Well, I suppose it's better to put in the effort than to stumble in with greasy hair and tattered clothing.
Woah. Thats hilarious. When I went to see Man of La Mancha, our teacher made us all dress up so I had this formal cocktail dress on and even then I felt overdressed. I cant imagine wearing a dress that could be taken to the red carpet or prom to broadway. I mean sure its nice to dress up and its always good to look formal but not to that extreme. :-P

whatever makes em happy I guess. Ive seen everything from ball gowns to shorts to underwear (rocky horror) to spikes (sebastian bach in whatever). Ive been guilty of two of the four. I dont own shorts and the dressiest thing Ive ever worn to theater was a cocktail dress.
So you wore underwear, huh?

saw rocky horror in my bra and a skirt.
Jeans are okay to wear to Broadway shows in NY right? Can you tell I've never been there?
Yeah, jeans are okay as long as you look presentable.
I wore a very nice dress to the opera - but not to the theater.

Okay, so maybe wearing a "ballgown" to the theatre is a little much, but what's wrong with dressing up? Actually there's something a little nostalgic about it all. Whatever happened to the days when people dressed "to the 9s"? When did we become a society that deems it ok to wear pyjamas out in public??? Sorry, that's my pet peeve.

Really, dressing up for the theater used to be the norm. I like seeing people still dressing up for the occassion, and even though I don't particularly want to myself, it's kind of sad that they stick out these days.
Ultra formal I don't think I could do (gowns, gloves and tiaras) But getting a bit dressed up for an evening of theatre, dinner and drinks is my norm.

It's really not that unusual in the city. You see people dressed formally for the theatre all the time. I think it's kind of nice although I wouldn't necessarily do it myself. I do like when people at least dress up a little when they go, though, and not just wear jeans and a top. I think it shows respect to the actors, to the event itself, and to theatre, in general, if you dress nicely. Think of it this way, if you're going out for a really nice meal that was the equivalent price to a Broadway ticket, would you wear jeans?
I go to the theater several times a week. The crowd last night made me chuckle. I think a lot of the people there have never been to a Broadway show.
One woman wore a dress made out of gems. I am serious.
She had full length gloves and a tiara.
AMUSING.
Her child was wearing a ballerina costume. It was like the circus. I needed popcorn.
This was POTO right? I mean maybe they might have thought they "had to" be that dressed up?

I saw Wicked last night, and I also noticed that there seemed to be more people dressed up then usual.

Okay, people here do realize there is more going on in New York than just theater, right?
Often there are formal events taking place on a regular basis at most hotels. Yes, formal events where people dress up, attend, and then dash off to the theater immediately following. Often a show is in conjunction with the event. You know like theater tickets as the party favor, host gift, etc. Formal events are often planned in midtown so groups can then attend a broadway show.
Also it was Mardi Gras last night - that may have been a factor,
Ball gowns are a little extravagant, but, hey, if people want to dress up to go to the theatre, I say by all means.
No. The womans husband was wearing chords and a sweater and the wife and daughter were in ball gowns. Trust me it was dress up Barbie day.
You had to see the outfit to understand.
oh, that sounds like fun!
I miss people dressing for special occasions...

Me too! I have a dress I'm saving for the night I'm seeing Spamalot. It is RED! *claps hands* I can't wait!
