Guess What I think of this...
Why? Why? Why? What makes this stupid Adam Sandler movie worth turning into a Broadway musical? Would someone please explain.
I'm placing my bet now. I believe that it will be even worse than Hairspray but that the reviews will be great and it will be a huge campy cult musical that will run for years and years. I can see the casting now...Matthew Morrison and Laura Bell Bundy (because you know they are really talented)? Or how about Kerry Butler? And then there are the replacement casts...John Stamos is certain to play the role at one time or another. It will close in 2020 and by then we will have seen Broadway Musical productions of Shrek starring Nathan Lane, the new Broadway phenomenon - Action Musicals (including Speed and Terminator- I & II) including real gunfire and buses on stage, and of course we must not leave out the Broadway production of Justin & Kelly (with the real people- OMG).
I really don't think I'm being ridiculous predicting this. These medicore at best movies turned into musicals are ridiculous but my predictions seem rather safe. Don't you think?

wait... the shrek comment, you know they ARE actually planning on staging Shrek, right? like, i hope you weren't just being silly, b/c about a year ago i read A LOT about it.... Yipes!
(yeah, i said YIPES! what now?)
BUT here's my feeling about THE WEDDING SINGER. Its the story of a guy w/ a hiarious job who meets the waitress. NOW if it hadn't been an Adam Sandler movie first, the bway community would be say "aw... cute romance story.." b/c think about it... if you think about the simple version of the plot it could be cute. just remove the sandler.

Posted: 1/11/04 at 4:49pmPLUS, there are reasons for songs when a person is a wedding singer. And as we know with the always-referenced "potential new younger audience members for musicals," it's the fact that people suddenly burst into song that a lot of musical haters can't get beyond.

Big difference between Hairspray and Wedding Singer - Hairspray used camp as an artistic style, but the story (both film and musical) tackle some hard-hitting social issues of the 60s. Wedding Singer is a formulaic romantic comedy that tries (unsuccessfully) to emulate the 80s, but without any resonant issues of the decade.

Your unprovoked statement of self-defense gives you away.

FindingNamo- you're right. If musicals continue in this direction I'm sure they will be a thing of the past by 2020.
And you know we all want to listen to the songs that a wedding singer from the 80's would sing.

I'm not annoyed by The Wedding Singer being a musical, it's more the fact that EVERYTHING is 'said' to be turning into musicals -
LEGALLY BLONDE
SHREK
CATCH ME IF YOU CAN
THE WEDDING SINGER
- just spring to mind, but until it actually happens, take it with a pinch of salt. Things happen - backers drop out, it falls through, the material's not strong enough. Just because they're working on it doesn't mean it will happen, and doesn't mean it will hit Broadway.

Posted: 1/11/04 at 5:52pmAnd that's a good thing. The Wedding Singer is one that seems most viable, but why don't people want to do these shows as small off-beat little shows? Why do they have to take up Broadway space and command Broadway prices when I bet they would fly real high in a storefront theater in Chicago or at the fringe festival or something?

Posted: 1/13/04 at 4:23amI think it will be brilliant. Unlike Hairspray, it's likely to have a good score. The 80's, musically especially, are muuuccchh cooler than the 60's, for one. It also has the roles for 4 absolutely amazing performances in the right hands. I can't wait. Outside of the traditional Wildhorn/Schoenberg style musical theatre, it could be the best 'remake' musical in years.
