West Side Story

I'm seeing this classic for my first time in July. I do hope half of it isn't in Spanish like the current Broadway version.
#2

West Side Story

The current broadway version has toned down much of the spanish. The version coming to Australia is directed by the guy who did the choreography for the Broadway production.

Since I'm seeing it in NY next week I'm undecided if I'm going to catch it here.
Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.

What are you going to see? Make sure you see SOUTH PACIFIC - one of the best shows we've ever seen on Broadway. Pity you missed FINIAN'S RAINBOW - that was fantastic, too. And shame you're too early for DREAMGIRLS.

I'm seeing

Sondheim on Sondheim
West Side Story
Next to Normal
A Little Night Music
La Cage Aux Folles
Anyone Can Whistle

I've got one free spot that I could consider seeing South Pacific, thanks :P. (Now that LIPS TOGETHER, TEETH APART has been cancelled).

You have made some good choices there. How long are you in NYC for?

West Side Story

Still trying to get over the trauma of the last production that played here, a very miscast Marina Prior in a woeful production, that came alive whenever Caroline O'Connor stepped on stage.
Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

When was that? 1997?
#8

West Side Story

I think somewhere around 92 or 93. The Victoria State Opera was still around ( they where one the producers ) played at the Princess in Melbourne so after Phantom, but maybe before Beauty?

I'm not a fan of WSS so didn't see that production rosscoe(au), but you are the first person who I've heard bag it. From all I heard it was the production to beat. I did see that awful production from the 1980's that had, at one point Caroline O' Connor playing Maria!

West Side Story

I thought Caroline O'Connor was meant to be great in anything she did...?
#11

West Side Story

I'm seeing this at the Lyric Theatre...
I hope it doesn't disappoint...
#12

West Side Story

I'm seeing it too. At the very least the orchestra should do a great job with the music.
#13

West Side Story

Tickets are sparse it seems, so I'm seeing it from like the second row......hopefully it's bearable.

(I find it interesting I paid more to see it here than in NY.)

Which means it's selling well, right? We're in the front row, I think. Really looking forward to it.
#15

West Side Story

Yes it does appear to be selling well (but better than NIGHT MUSIC at the Opera house).

I'm seeing NIGHT MUSIC on opening night in 2 weeks. I'll let you know how it is.
#17

West Side Story

I'm seeing the final performance...so am looking forward to your report! Where are you sitting?

I don't know. My friend usually gives me tickets on the night. It's usually Premium seats, but we have had some C Reserve.

West Side Story

I saw WEST SIDE STORY last night and loved it. The dancing and choreography were as good as anything I've seen on Broadway.

The opening two lines of "I feel pretty" were changed from:

"I feel pretty, oh so pretty, I feel pretty and witty and gay / and I pity any girl who isn't me today"

to

"I feel pretty, oh so pretty, I feel pretty and witty and bright / and I pity any girl who isn't me tonight"

presumably to stop any tittering in the audience by immature people who can only associate "gay" with homosexuality.

My only complaint is that for the song "America", there were only 6 girls on stage, and one sat down whilst the other 5 danced their way through the number. There should have been at least 10 girls on stage.

A full house, the audience loved it, so make sure you see it.

The Melbourne Herald Sun yesterday says that Sydney has not sold well at all and that tickets early in the week are now priced $50 less than they were at the commencement of the season.
#21

West Side Story

That wouldn't surprise me. Saturday nights are usually best for shows, cause people want to do something on the main night of the weekend.

Still, it doesn't help that Sydney's main obsessions are sport, alcohol and gambling.

West Side Story

TheKryptoniteKid, those are the generaly-used lyrics for that song.

And there are only supposed to be that many girls in America, they are all named parts etc.

It's just the movie that makes it seem otherwise...

West Side Story

Only ONE of the five musical lyrics sites I visited had the "bright/tonight" opening rhyme. All the rest had the "gay/today" lyrics.

The original show had the "gay/today" opening lyrics. The "bright/tonight" might be generally performed now, but it's not how I know the song, and I've been listening to it since the 1970s.

Thanks for letting me know about the "America" song. It just seemed odd considering all the male songs had a lot more guys performing each one.

Sondheim admits to being embarrassed by his lyrics to I Feel Pretty, in particular the lyric "it's alarming how charming I feel".

As he says, this is from an uneducated Porto Rican girl. He claims he was going through his MY FAIR LADY period.

I didn't know that. Thanks for the insight. Makes sense.
