Hi there! I am doing a term paper on how the American Musicals of the mid-twentieth century (namely West Side Story, Flower Drum Song, and South Pacific)reveal underlying and obvious racial tensions of the era, and how audiences responded, not only to the music, but also to the subject matter. I was just wondering if you guys had any interesting thoughts on the topic, since it is a result of my love for the broadway community! if not, sorry to have wasted the viewing space!

I don't know if this is helpful in any way, but I believe there was a performance of WSS scheduled @ UMASS not too many years ago, and it was cancelled due to protests regarding its subject matter. I was surprised because it seems like that would be an outlet for discussion on racial tensions, gang warfare, etc., not a reason for protest.
