Fair enough. I think Rollin's performance is what sticks with me, as does some of the cinematography (sp? it is late). The physical, steaming anger, pride and humiation he portrayed just sticks with me. It was so physical and so contained at teh same time. And, I read the book after seeing the movie, so I was not looking for some of the references you mentioned. So, I just viewed it as a straw that broke the camel's back.
It has been years since I watched it in its entirety, it may be time to buy the DVD and revisit it. Even if my memory is being kind, watching Rollins will make the time well spent.
Anyway, enough quasi-thread jacking. Rent, a new song, and the fact that November cannot come soon enough . . .
Have a good evening
It's not fair! The man died. It's not his fault. One of his songs should be eligible for an Oscar. I hate rules.
Ahh the excitement and anticipation! I can't wait to hear this, whatever it is they're recording. My first guess would be something that Jonathan Larson wrote before he passed on, like maybe from the NYTW version that was cut out for Broadway. Maybe they're taking one of those songs or a song that wasn't even in the NYTW version and are "modernizing" and re-working it with new instrumentals etc. I don't know but I'm very intrigued.
I assume/hope the song will be on the Soundtrack in September.
*watches speculation fly* Ohh pretty.

lbh, it won't be able to be nominated if jonathan wrote it, because, um... he couldn't have written a new song for this movie.
I am aware of his unfortunate passing HOWEVER. I'm saying that if the song was not used in a show then it could be eligable that's just what I'm thinking and who knows, the oscar's may think the same way. Doubtful, but it's the optimist in me.
Do ya think the Academy will take pity, since they know the author is not alive to create a new song?? Really, I know awards don't mean much but the music of RENT is so special I feel it deserves a nomination.

you never know if this song they are using was planned on being used in a film adaptation of Rent. They have been planning on bringing Rent to the big screen since it opened on Broadway.
They can always acknowledge it with a sound design award - which is what they did with Ray and Chicago.
in my fantasy world, i keep envisioning someone finding an old post-it note attached to some amazing song written by Jonathan saying "This would only work for a 'Rent' movie" or something to that effect...
I'm rooting for this movie way too hard

BELIEVE ME - I'm rooting for RENT just as hard but I know the Academy rarely (if ever) makes exceptions to its rules.
They also seem to be very serious about this rule specifically:
https://ampas.org/press/pressreleases/1999/99.06.16.html
"The Board approved the Music Branch's revised definition of Original Song, which specifies that a song must be written specifically for the film in which it appears. "The Music Branch Executive Committee wanted to emphasize the long-standing rule that already-existing songs are not eligible for Academy Award consideration," said Academy Executive Director Bruce Davis. "We're emphasizing that a song can't be taken out of a drawer and plugged into an essentially finished film. To qualify, a song has to be composed for the particular film that it's in, so that it reflects and contributes to that particular picture's mood or theme."
Nino Rota, the composer of THE GODFATHER music, famously had his nomination REVOKED to huge public and industry outcry after it was discovered he had used the theme in an obscure, independent Italian film.
So it doesn't look good...
But you never know - the AMPAS Executive Committee can determine any questions of eligibility, and we've certainly seen the power of the RENT fanbase before...

I also heard that "Come What May" from Moulin Rouge couldn't be nominated for original song because the composer first wrote it with the intention of putting it in Baz's other project, William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

^ Yeah, that's true. Which also bummed me out because Come What May is gorgeous.

As much as I wish the Academy would allow a Jonathon Larson song to be eligible for a nomination, I think that there is no way that they would allow it. It's one of those things were if the Academy were to allow it for one person or one movie, then they would have to allow it for all movies.
The Academy most likely will not make an allowance for the RENT movie even though the circustances regarding Jonathon Larson's death were so tragic. And even if he were alive today, no one really knows for sure that he would write another song to go along with the RENT movie.
As for the song to be played at the end, I would have loved for it to have been the version of Boho Days (the one that JOnathon sings) that is on the TTB cast recording.
Come What May is, in my opinion, one of the greatest film themes ever written, and I don't say such things lightly.
I have to agree. Come what may is one of my favorite songs, and although because of the previous intention of putting it in romeo and juliet it didn't get a nomination I'm just glad that it ended up in moulin rouge instead, I think it fits the film so well.
oh, and as far as the rent movie soundtrack, did I miss something about a realease date? a previous post mentions it being out in september.....
