A new musical adaptation of the cult classic play and film Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean will make its world premiere at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley this summer. Titled 5 & Dime, the new musical will perform June 18–July 13, with opening night set for June 21.
The musical will feature music by Dan Gillespie Sells (Everybody's Talking About Jamie), lyrics by Shakina, and a book by Ashley Robinson. The work, originally written as a 1976 stage play by Ed Graczyk, centers on a group of female Jimmy Dean superfans gathering to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the film icon's untimely death when a stranger arrives ready to settle old scores. Originally debuting at Ohio's Players' Theatre, the play came to Broadway in 1982, playing just a brief 52-performance run. Stage director Robert Altman directed a film version the same year with the complete Broadway cast reprising their performances, including Sandy Dennis, Cher, Karen Black, Sudie Bond, Mark Patton, and Kathy Bates.
Shakina (Difficult People, Connecting) will also star as Joanne in the upcoming world premiere, with Lauren marcus as Mona, Stephanie Gibson as Sissy, Ashley Cowl as Edna Louise, Judith Miller as Lornetti, Ellie Van Amerongen as Joe, and Hayley Lovgren as Stella May.
TheatreWorks Artistic Director Giovanna Sardelli is directing, leading a creative team that includes music director Jacob Yates, scenic designer Nina Ball, costume designer Alina Bokovikova, lighting designer Kurt Landisman, and sound designer Cliff Caruthers. Taylor McQuestern will serve as stage manager with Laura Hicks as assistant stage manager. The musical is being produced in partnership with Broadway & Beyond Theatricals.
