I have to disagree, I feel Glen Close was the best choice to open in on Broadway. Although I did not see Patti do it I have heard her recordings. It is true she sings the hell out of those songs. But the show needed a MOVIE STAR. I saw Glen, Betty, Petula and Elaine in the role, and all were wonderful.
If you want something that is like Gloria Swanson would have played it you choose Elaine. The best singer Betty. The most peculiar you would take Petula, but the most tragic, and realistic performance of a crazy, lonely star of the past its Glen.
We must also remember that as much as we call shows entertainment; it is a business, and by that I mean you want to make the most money as possible. Glen Close never played to an empty seat during her run in Sunset. Patti is playing to many empty seats in Sweeney Todd. (Which is a Superior Production and should not be missed by anyone) Unfortunately Patti is not as big a box office name as Glen Close, and the dollar is always the bottom line.
