A good book and wonderful lyrics that really tell a story (and aren't just catchy but "empty".) If the person(s)is/are singing something vapid and needlessly repetivite I get really irritated...the same way I get frustrated at Operas when the singer has been stabbed, lies mortally wounded and yet miraculously manages to sing away at full volume for endless minutes. A dying tenor in full voice. Not even the hint of the life oozing from him...

And, another thing that would help me enjoy a musical (drum roll) Patrick Wilson--had to toss that in...(I heard that at the World Premiere showing of "The Alamo" last night, they had him sing "God Bless America" as part of the prelude to showing the film, and he really moved the audience.)

A good book (it BETTER be a confusing plot), music that won't put me to sleep (*cough* most of ALW's stuff...), aaaand a cheap ticket price.

And I mean cheap.

I'll have to agree with MasterLCZ, even if you're not that talented BUT.. you're REALLY nice and spend tons and tons of time with your fans, I'll love the show and the actors in it!

Seriously, something, anything as long as it ISN'T a revival, a rehash, a John Travolta movie turned into what's considered to be a musical, a revival, a Reese Witherspoon movie, anything else to do with the Land of Oz and it's Munchkinlanders, a revival, an import from London,etc... would be a treat! Did I mention anything that is NOT a revival?

i dont think anyone could can pin point what EXACTLY makes you love a musical. I think the bottom line is the feeling you get from watching it and when you leave!
