Posted: 6/10/09 at 8:21pmMy friend is going to New York and asked me to recommend a few shows that she should see. What are the must-see shows on Broadway right now?

Posted: 6/10/09 at 9:04pmI'm sorry, the two statements, they don't like a whole lot of fluff and that they enjoyed Lion King and Wicked... just give me a second to catch my breath from laughing so hard...

Posted: 6/10/09 at 9:12pmWell, my friend and her mother enjoyed those two. . . her dad is the one who doesn't really like fluff. . . plus, my friend is a teenager, she is entitled to like musicals like Lion King and Wicked

Posted: 6/10/09 at 9:39pmI'd say the only non-fluff musicals playing right now is Next to Normal and Hair. Can't go wrong with either.

As jagfkb said, "not liking fluff" but "liking Wicked" is a contradiction in the highest.
However, I think Billy Elliot and Hair are two drastically different shows that have a wonderful balance of "non-fluffness" (patent pending) and entertainment value. I'd say one of those.

Posted: 6/11/09 at 2:30pmI don't know that Hair is a show I would ever want to see with my parents though. I would go with Next to Normal, West Side Story and Billy Elliot( If they can get tickets for under 789853982 dollars)

The immediate question is where do they live and will tours come there? If they live in or near a touring city, most musicals either already have or will play there. In the case of Billy Elliot it may not be soon.
Figure out what won't play there anytime soon or at all and go see those shows. Or in the case of South Pacific, it will play proscenium houses on tour but in NYC the show is staged on a thrust stage which adds to its immediacy.
Next To Normal, Hair (to a degree) and South Pacific are shows playing now that will be hard to duplicate in the larger road houses.

If you don't like "fluff!" Stay away from popular shows that tourist are constantly flocking too... (Wicked, Lion King)... Pretty much anything that has Disney's name on it. Also, stay away from Shrek... VERY FLUFFY! But I must say it is amazing... I love Brian D'ary James! DON'T SEE ROCK OF AGES! Go see Next to Normal, Phantom (Of course), Billy Elliott, and Hair... Those shows are awesome! And if you want to go to a good play, go see God of Carnage or the Norman Conquests!

Posted: 6/11/09 at 5:19pmI saw Hair with my 79 year old Bill O'Rielly lovin' Republican Aunt. She had a blast and is still telling everyone about how awesome it was and how she got up and danced at the end!
