Check out the list of nominees for Best Supporting Actor/Actress in the Tony's over the years. No doubt you'll notice that many of them are standout characters, and often times several of them are comic relief to the otherwise dramatic lead characters.
I'll add The Drowsy Chaperone and Aldolpho to the list.
