It won't be revived on Broadway anytime soon (if ever again) -- the last revival in 2000 limped along for about four months before it closed losing its entire $10 million investment. When shows flop that badly, producers become very hesitant to ever invest in them again.

I saw it on Broadway and bought the DVD and I think it plays much better on TV than on stage, maybe because it was so influenced by music video to begin with. Also in the theatre it was excruciatingly loud, and I'm someone who spends a lot of time at rock concerts pressed up against the stage--it was just TOO LOUD. And the cross of lights was blinding. That is the only show I've seen that was physically painful to see and hear.

It's one of my favorite "music" musicals.
I preferred the earlier stagings, though. Personally I find Gayle Edwards direction of the 2000 Bd'w revival and current tour crass and offensive. The 2000 Bd'w prod. was very bloody and loud. Glen Carter was very weak as Jesus. Tony Vincent's rock fit in well because it had such an edgy screaming rock theme. Kevin Gary was a very good Pilate and Lawrence Skala (sp) was an awesome Caiphas, though.
The tour cast was a bit better minus Sebastian Bach, who was just ridiculously miscast. Eric Kunse is a good Jesus replacement. Carl Anderson was wonderful as Judas as is Natalie Toro's Mary. That's just my view.

Ill be honest. I didnt really like it. I was a lot younger though and thought the part where they beat him was scary lol. It also did have much scenery so I was also a little bored. It was before I became a Broadway lover. If I saw it now I might like it a bit more. I dont really love ALW's music too much. A few of his songs are good but...idk. It was good i guess...sorry

My high school class enjoyed it, but I skipped out and saw Miss Saigon instead. 
From what I hear, it was dark but campy and rather bad, and that the London staging (at the Palladium) was much better. I'm curious to see it on video, though; I've been in a college production of the musical, but I've never seen it from the audience.

The movie version (the 1970's movie) was the right tone and everything, just horrible singers minus a few. the 2000 production had a bad Jesus and Judas.....everyone else was good. The 1996 London Cast recording is the best because it has AWESOME singers and it is IN YOUR FACE. I love it

I saw the tour right after Bach left. Right after meaning a day after. Kunse hadn't come in yet. I saw a really horrible understudy. Honestly, it was the worst understudy experience I've ever had. Natalie Toro was amazing though. Carl Anderson rocked as well. I was glad to see him before he died.

This thread made me think back to May, when I saw JCS on tour. Eric Kunze was great, and definitely the only time I have ever especially liked the actor playing Jesus. Lawrence Clayton as Judas was pretty eh, unfortunately, since I love the role of Judas and LOVE Jerome Pradon in the movie version. I enjoyed the whole production, since it was the first time I had seen the show live, but the weird thing that I am just now remembering is this:
We saw the show on Mother's Day, and at the end when Jesus was on the cross, he did his usual ("father, forgive them...") I believe, but then said "Where is my mother?" a few times and then "where is my mother...on mother's day". I thought that it was very weird and kind of inappropriate for such a moment, I don't know. It created a very awkward atmosphere. I just thought I'd share that!

I saw this show many times on broadway (mainly because of student tickets!!!! and because i had a few friends in the show). I don't know. The production was ok. I didn't really like Glenn Carter, but I did enjoy Tony Vincent (loved his voice and not too bad to look at either!! hehe). I love the music in this show and could really listen to it all day long. I don't have a recording of it though. Can anybody suggest a really good cast recording of JCS that I could buy. Thanx guys.

yes, buy the 1996 London Cast. It is the best recording, in my opinion. I love JCS. If RENT or POTO wasn't around, it would be my favorite.

Thanx for the advice. Once I get my first paycheck of the year (being a teacher with summers off is really good until u get to August and u have no money left!!!) I will have to go out and buy it.

anyway, the revival of JCS was cool but i missed yvonne elliman, she really did a slammin job in the original. i love the original movie...and i wear out that soundtrack...ted neely is great in it, so is carl anderson.....in my book that version is priceless
