You'd really need to be involved in theater to understand why a conductor, or a director or a stage manager or a tech director or a costume designer or a props master or a house manager or a dance captain or a swing is integral to the process. It's a collaborative art and no one contribution can stand on its own without the support of the others.

I often see performers glancing at the conductor monitor, which I usually locate before a show. Just to see what equipment they are using. there is a camera on the conductor that is on monitors usually placed against the mezz.
