I know this might sound stupid, but for someone such as myself, living in a town completely devoid of culture, I have never been able too see a cabaret. Should I go..what can I expect? What is it that makes the difference between a cabaret and a one man/woman solo musical? The presence of a hand mic?
Thanks

There's no storyline. It's not scripted. Etc.

Peter Allen was a cabaret act when he went out on his own... just a person singing material (usually their own).
Cabaret, As I've expereinced, is one artist (or two) telling a story or conveying a message through selected songs. They most often have a "theme" and they are often loosly scripted by the perfomer. The scripting is brief and helps advance the songs and sets the mood.
Typically, a Cabaret show is often one performer with a piano or small band. They perform about 90 min. with/without a break. A Cabaret room is usually a smaller venue of about 100 or less with tables and drinks and light fare. Oten there's a cover charge or drink minimum.
I love Cabaret! It's a great way to really see what's in a performers heart through their music and presentation.

I have to disagree with some of you. Some cabaret acts are entirely scripted, it seems that the performer is speaking extemporaneously, but it's all been written down and rehearsed.
Does one have to be over 21 to attend a cabaret because of the drink minimums?
Life is a cabaret.
I seriously considered posting that, sum.
... come to the Cabaret....
