He sang "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" last night, and he sounded great.

65Rosesauthor, it seems you may have accidentally hit your Caps Lock button. When you post in the future, could you please check this before submitting you post? I know that no reasonable person would ever do something like that on purpose.
I think everyone agrees that Len Cariou is a Broadway legend and that we don't see enough of him.
I believe that was the main point of the thread.
I was too young to have seen him in "Sweeney," but when he sang at the Sondheim birthday tribute, I thought my heart would stop. So thrilling and beautiful.

I saw him do the Sondheim 75th birthday tribute at the Hollywood Bowl, where he and Angela sang "Little Priest." They were both fantastic. That whole evening was/is one of the most unforgettable live events I've ever attended.

My guess is that he doesn't want to commit to singing a role on stage for 8 shows a week anymore. I'm sure he has his reasons. He's fine with one-off concerts and limited engagements, and so is his voice, I might add.
So THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM.

If only it wasn't 65Rosesauthor's STORY TO YELL....er, TELL!
what? What?? WHAT??? WHAT????
(nobody's being rude, we just want to make sure Len Cariou hears this.)

65RoseAuthor, have you been taking typing lessons from Alice Ripley?
He sang an absolutely gorgeous "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" at Broadway Backwards on Monday.
His voice was as rich and as warm as ever, and he brought out both the poignancy and the strength of the character, whom he introduced as an "old broad...with money. Maybe an old dumb broad with money. You decide."
Each time his still-strong baritone notes held onto the words at the end of the phrase "bewitched, bothered and bewildered am I," the audience melted, the way Reginald described.
And his crescendo on "thank god I can be oversexed again" was, in a way, more joyous and triumphant than I have ever heard that phrase sung. And I've heard me many a Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" in my life.

"65RoseAuthor, have you been taking typing lessons from Alice Ripley?"
That's what I first thought.
Besty you are closer than you think! I do not comment on his singing ability, his continued performces speaks to his skill there.
SO this is what happened via a close personal friend of both mine and Mr Cariou. That Frost/Nixon at CAnstage. This mutal friend asked me if I noticed anything odd about the performances. "only some rather lengthy pauses at times presuamably fraught w meaning"
NO- Mr C simply could not remember his lines David Storch (frost) had to constantly feed him his cues, lines.( and it never got better through out the run) As a result,Mr Cariou has determined no more live roles- esp in leads! Tv & fim w retakes and the lines are commited to "sides" for shooting purposes- that the road he is going to go.
There! Are you HAPPY NOW!?!?!?!?!
OMG SOMEONE IS LIKE TOTALLY OFF THEIR MEDS.
I ALMOST WANT TO SAY SOMETHING ABOUT LEN NOT SOUNDING GOOD JUST TO GET ANOTHER HILARIOUS POST FROM HIS SECRET IDENTITY AS POSTER 65Rosesauthor.
BUT I WON'T BECAUSE I THINK HE STILL SOUNDS FINE.
BUT PLEASE DON'T LET THAT STOP YOU FROM ENTERTAINING US WITH MORE COMMENTS 65Rosesauthor!

He was having difficulty with lines when they did ALL MY SONS at the Geffen, and that was almost 5 years ago.
I love Sweeney Todd, but I'm very particular about how Sweeney has to be played- I have to see the psychological wheels turning in a very particular way to become immersed in the material.
George and Michael and John are great, but Len is the only Sweeney I consider to be legitimate.
A quick Google search shows that 65rosesauthor is most likely Len's wife- thanks for the update, but don't use capslock. It polarizes people or it makes you look like Alice Ripley.

Wow I actually totally forgot I started this thread...
Just for clarification, I wasn't starting it to be nasty, I was just genuinely curious as to why we didn't see more of him in musicals these days.
You should watch how you phrase things in the future.
Imagine how "I thought Cariou might have died" sounded.
And to those of us who knew that he was alive and thriving and still performing vibrantly, you seemed like a troll, trying to stir up an argument.

Really, I promise I'm not a troll and I don't want to stir up trouble. I didn't want to lead the discussion in this direction, but the main reason I posted is that someone told me he "ruined his voice" doing Sweeney, and I knew that if anyone would know whether or not it was true, it would be the folks on here. I'm really glad to hear that he is still in at least close to the fine voice I love on the original Sweeney and Night Music recordings!
