I was just thinking about this after I watched the performance of NPH and the cast of the NY Phil's "Company" at the Tonys.

It made me realise wouldn't it have been an awesome cast for a Broadway revival, a fully stage Broadway revival with Patti as Joanne (she would have earned a Tony nod no doubt for that performance), NPH as Bobby and at least some of the cast in their same roles (they probably wouldn't be able to hold on to all of them for a run).

It made me realise how amazing a production it would have been I think instead of Doyle's minimalist 2006 version.

I think it would have received Tony nominations for Revival of a Musical, Actor in a Musical (NPH), Featured Actress (LuPone), perhaps more acting nods..

Any thoughts?

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL.

NPH...check. LuPone...check. Colbert...maybe. Cryer...unless he's a covert egomaniac, don't see it. Who among the rest of them exhibits diva tendencies? Enquiring minds want to know...

BTW, loved the Doyle version. It let you focus on the music and the performers. What I've seen of the previews of the new version just make it look...busy.

The opinion of a production goes down in direct proportion to the number of people who can see it. When this production was three performances only, pretty much everyone who saw it raved- but of course if you saw the dress rehearsal THAT was the show to see! When only a few hundred people could see it, man it was the best!

Now that it's been captured on film and (almost) anyone can see it, no one will like it. That's how you can tell a REAL theater fan- they hate all theater.

Follies was pretty damn popular when no one had seen the original production. The Concert version only ran two nights so it was STILL pretty awesome. Now you can go to D.C. and see it, well, frankly why bother? If it transfers to Broadway, it will suck as bad as Little Night Music did. (Did you ever notice the movie was even considered good when no one could get it? Mass market release on the DVD has put an end to that- until it goes out of print again! Then it'll be an under appreciated work.)
