It's a song you sing in a bar at 2:00 in the morning on top of a piano in a smokey bar with a scotch in one hand and a Marlboro in the other. Helps if the song is about unrequited love or being dumped or preferably both.

A sentimental love song, usually one lamenting unrequited love. Typically (but not always) sung by women. Sondheim's classic torch song is "Losing My Mind" from Follies. Other torch songs include "As Long As He Needs Me" from Oliver! and "On My Own" from Les Miserables.

I've hear someoen call "My Man" the epitome of a Torch Song.

Basically anything Judy Garland sings is a Torch Song, well obvi not everything, but a lot of it.

It comes from the expression "carrying a torch for someone".
Would "It had to be you" be a torch song?

emcee, great example of a male torch song. i've always thought of "with every breath i take" from city of angels as the most classic torch song!
