I am not a "Les Mis" person and haven't particularly loved past productions but, on a friend's insistence, I went begrudgingly to see this revival and was truly surprised at how much I loved it, particularly Ramin's Jean Valjean. The production has a very visceral quality that I appreciated and I think Ramin's performance alone makes it worth a trip. I went to see Ramin twice so far and will probably go again before his run ends. I think the work he is doing is truly special. I was fortunate enough to see both Earl Carpenter & Will Swenson play Javert - and I thought Carpenter was the best Javert I've ever seen (and I saw Terrence Mann in the original). Really gave Ramin a great and equal foil to play against. The new staging of Javert's suicide is pretty amazing too...
I have loved this show, since I saw the original in it's first week at the Barbican. Having seen it a few times since. I now think the current production at the Imperial, is nothing more than a caricature of the original. The couple playing the Thernardiers just seem to be having time, no characterization what so ever (did the Director explain, they should have a sinister aspect. I suspect not). The rendition of 'On My Own' was almost criminal. It is not a pop song. It felt to me, whenever we came to one of the 'hits'. The actor came out of character, went to the front apron and sang it to the audience. I thought the whole thing was soulless. Devoid of any of the emotion, present in the score.
