My personal favorite is Les Miz and my favorite lyricist is Stephen Sondheim. Also, what is your favorite musical song lyric?
Phantom. I love everything about it. Every song and every scene.
I'm pretty partial to the music from both 'In the Heights' and 'Next to Normal'. Neither one is your 'typical' showtunes. 'Les Miserables' is always a favourite as well.
I love Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson because as dragonlp86 said is is not typical. I also love Next to Normal and A Little Night Music!

Jason Robert Brown's Parade... Stunning
Wow. That's like who's your favourite child.
Okay, I'll play. Gershwin, first off. While OF THEE I SING is decent enough, I maintain STRIKE UP THE BAND (the play, not the abysmal movie) is his best Broadway score. If you dont know it, seriously, rush to Amazon or iTunes or whatever and look for the Smithsonian recording done about ten years ago. You will walk away convinced we need a revival of this show, even more than GYPSY or all the other redundant classics.
Sondheim. Well, everyone will say that. But it's the OCR of COMPANY that is on my desert island list.
And i have very fond memories of my university's production of YOURE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN (not the least of which being I was madly in love with Schroeder before I even understood the concept of being gay) that I have to add that in there too.
