It depends on the show and whether its at night or matinee.
For example, I saw a Spamalot matinee and everyone around me was wearing jeans or nice pants and nice shirts.

Ive never seen it, but im sure for a night performance of Les Mis people are a but more formal.

If youre seeing something along the lines of Spring Awakening, Spamalot, The Little Mermaid, etc. Casual is probably fine. Again, it depends.

HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your first time in NYC will be amazing :)
