Posted: 8/16/06 at 12:00pmI was on a business trip in DC when I saw it on a Thursday Night at the National Theater. I thought it was great, although I seem to remember that the theater was quite empty. Was that back when DC was the murder capitol of the US?

Well, Leslie Uggams has little to no stage presence. Fabulous voice, yes. But the re-written version of "Anything Goes" was done for Lupone, and Paige, and Uggams couldn't cut it.
Honestly, I've never understood Leslie Uggams. I know she debuted in "Halluliah, Baby," and she sounds okay on the cast album. But honestly, Dihann Caroll was the talent, if we're talking about African American actresses of that period. Leslie? Not so much.
I'm just saying.

During the concert of Jerry Herman music that was recorded live at the Hollywood Bowl, Leslie Uggams' rendition of "If He Walked Into My Life" was far and away the highlight of the show.
She floored me. (And it looked like it floored Jerry as well. The camera showed him after the number and he was in tears while he was clapping.)
She was really outstanding in that. Her Reno Sweeney, however, never really took off.
