Whats up with hairspray's Velmas (not april fools)

I just read on broadway.com that karen mason is taking over as Velma von tussle next week. I could have sworn that Mary Birdsong JUST started in the role, and before her michelle pawk also had a fairly short run. Whats going on?

Karen Mason will earn the title of "Miss Baltimore Crabs" when the MAC Award-winning performer joins the Broadway company of Hairspray April 8.

Mason assumes the role of the dementedly devious Velma Von Tussle in the Broadway production (Mary Birdsong is the current Velma; she exits April 6).
