It also depends how big you are, I am way over 6 foot, probably more 6 and a half, so if I sit anywhere with a slight overhang, Im screwed! In fact last week I went to see a show and it was so bad I couldnt even see the casts faces, and I couldnt move seats! This is in London so most of you wont know the theatre, but in case you do it was up at the top in the upper circle in The Duke Of Yorks theatre where Rent Remixed is playing!

If you're a tall person, the balcony of the New Amsterdam is sheer torture. I think I've been to all of the theaters but the Lyceum and have never had a less comfortable seat. Sightlines are fine, though, in my opinion. On the flipside, the Walter Kerr balcony is well worth the price if you're very tall, besides which almost every time I've purchased seats there (from Grey Gardens back to The Beauty Queen of Leenane), I've been moved up.
The worst seats I've ever had were the lotto seats at Chorus Line. So extreme left orchestra that it seemed like half the stage was obstructed. Okay for the $25, but I probably would have liked the show better if I could have seen more of it.
^ I happened to Love my seats for the rush in a choruls line perfect only couldnt see the one side but thats for the mirrors I could see everything!
If I really want to support a show I really like, I will pay more for my seat in general. I prefer to be as much in the center as I can get, while still being at or very near the aisle. Especially in large Theatres because there are less people you have to crawl over to get in and out of your seat.
I agree that some Mezz or Balcony seating makes seeing the whole stage better. That is if you are near or at the front row. I do not like being in the front row Orchestra, in front of a high stage. You cannot see everything very well.
No matter what, the worst seat is the one where the person sitting in front of you is so tall, they block almost the entire view of the stage.
People use to come to me all the time in the balc. and complain about the leg room and whatnot. Actually, I think its better to see that show higher up or in a box seat because of the end.
The reason why the seating capacity feels so tight/restricted in the balcony of the New Am is because its a landmark building. Although Disney came in/cleaned up and updated the look of it they never changed the width/room between the seats. Remember, people in the 20's were a hell of a lot smaller/shorter than us and they also had smaller legs. People over time have grown in weight/height, etc.

I would avoid sitting in the balcony at the palace theatre if you are at all afraid of heights. I had the sensation of almost falling throughout the entire show of Legally Blonde. It was also virtually impossible to see anything going on down on the stage.
Not a Broadway house, but the side seats at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia are awful! We had seats there for Dr. Doolittle, and I had to lean over to see anything happening on stage.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
