How exactly did that work when there was a show currently performing in the theater? When did they rehearse? How did they fit the set pieces in there? From what I've seen yen last few years, the Tonys pretty much take over their venue the week of the show. Obviously that wasn't possible when they used a Broadway house ever year. What about the matinee on Tony Sunday. There's no way a show could have performed and then had the broadcast in there that same evening. Was it just a much less elaborate ceremony then?
I went to one in 1968 @ the Shubert.Sat upstairs for $5 and had to wear a monkey suit to boot. The opening number was from Golden Rainbow.
