Yeah, they should never tamper with a show's iconic orchestrations, imo. Fans have come to identify with a distinct set of arrangements which serve as a show's character. The new orchestrations for Les Mis were totally awful. I haven't heard the London Rent revival ones but changing such well known orchestrations is stupid, imo.

Adelphi's production sounds promising. I'm excited to see it.

You know, I must of had amnesia or something because while I have heard nobody particularly like the London Remix, I just seriously have no recollection as to 'why' nobody like the London remix (complete and utter blank!). How bad was it? (And is there any Youtubes relating to it?)

^^

It was bad because they completely messed up the music, and the music IS Rent.

They changed the sound of the songs to try and update it, but it didn't work because of the poor effort into rearranging the score and the poor performances of the actors.

Take Me or Leave Me, was made into a kind of electronic/jazz number...which sounds vaguely interesting in principle, but it just didn't work. At all.

Seasons of Love was left untouched I seem to remember, but they had some weird riffs in there.

Out Tonight was trying to be a burlesque number, but the woman who was playing Mimi was AWFUL. She had a weak singing voice and can't imagine anyone less sexy.

I understand WHY they made this show, trying to reinvent the concept and image for new crowds...but the problem with that is that Rent is such a beloved show and tampering with what people know and love is not a good idea unless you have an incredibly talented bunch of people who can pull it off. They didn't.

I wouldn't be surprised if the revival of Rent, was set in modern times...it could still work, set/costume etc. but the music doesn't need altering to that degree to make it 'modern'.

Alas, it was just not good. Nice idea, poor effort.

That makes perfect sense. It is like doing a Fosse show without using his choreography/using poor sucky replacements (and yes I am looking hard at a certain not-so-sweet recent revival). re: When will they revive 'Rent?'

I suppose every show needs a strange and different interpretation, if only to prove how the original shouldn't be tampered with!

I agree with Trekkie and say no sooner tha 15-20 years. (if they are smart) Revisiting Hair this summer is especially interesting because the generation that it was about is now the age that Claude's parents are in the show. They whoever they are)should wait until all of the rentheads have kids that are teenagers, so that they can give the show to the next generation.
Someone should merge this thread and the one titled.."in all seriousness, place your bets" by scarywarhol...since they are essentially the same.
