I'm surprised that no one has faulted the economic environment of Broadway as being one of the factors. Off the top of my head I can name at least ten performers who, if the Broadway musical were a healthy being, would be stars.
Back in the Golden Age, you had performers like Nanette Fabray and Delores Gray and Kaye Ballard and Karen Morrow and Carmen Matthews and Gretchen Wyler, who had tremendous talent and charisma and just had the bad luck when it came to their shows. John Raitt starred in a flop "Magdalena" before he lucked into "Pajama Game" later that same year.
Nowadays, performers like Alix Korey and Judith Blazer and Judy Kaye don't have the shows to have bad luck with...
