They are completely different (songs). Personally, my favorite is the soundtrack

Yes, FAME was never on Broadway. The OCR was of the American tour company.

Matty said it right.
I have the movie soundtrack, the original North American touring cast, the original London cast, and even the original German cast! The North American touring cast is full of heart, and incredible.

Yeah, it's cute that the Fame OCR has both Gavin Creel and Jenn Gambatese from their slightly younger days. I mean I wouldn't say it's a great cast recording, I played the show in 10th grade that's why I have it, but there's some good stuff in there.

Here's an interesting question...one song from that CD has been cited as perhaps one of the worst songs ever written for musical theatre...any guesses to which it is?

Definitely the movie, it is so much better than the musical, which isn't the movie at all. Gotta love "I Sing the Body Electric."

The original London cast has the best orchestrations.. much richer than the more tinny American one.

Fame has one of my favourite musical songs in - In LA. Incredibly powerful, even when I saw the show for the fifth/sixth time it brought tears to my eyes. And I Can't Keep It Down is very funny, and I hate people who find it offensive or shocking, it's just good fun.

"Body Electric" is such a great song! When I did the show, we added that to the end of the first act, lots of fun. Very powerful song. "Hot Lunch" from the soundtrack is also a lot of fun.

I have always been of the opinion that the OCR makes the Baby Jesus Cry.

I saw the North American touring cast at their first performance... yeah when Gavin Creel and Jenn Gambatese were both mere tykes re: Which Fame CD - Movie or OCR?? And there was something truly electric about all the actors and the material then... By the time we got Fame on 42nd Street, the script had been changed so much (and not for the better) and the magic was just... done and gone. It IS a banal "high school" show, but the NATC conveys this with heart and charm, in my opinion...

The movie soundtrack is great. Only get the cast recordings if they are free. Terrible score of a show that shames the film on which it is based.

Good job Matty, indeed it was "Think of Meryl Streep." As it was being discussed, it was said to be a song of Serena's and my first thought was aww sure "Let's Play A Love Scene" isn't the greatest song, but it's cute, I wouldn't say it's the worst...then when they mentioned Meryl Streep I thought...ohh...well yeah, they do have a point.

I like Can't Keep it Down, it's actually one of my favorites. Though we of course had to cut it from our HS production re: Which Fame CD - Movie or OCR??

And I didn't think there were that many cuts in Fame on 42nd Street, as playing the show I knew most of the words from when I wasn't playing by heart. I think some of it was the sets and cast. IMO Carmen was awful. Way too overacted. Serena was cute..I mean the show isn't that great to begin with I suppose, and that production didn't do it any justice.
