Which Show?

Okay I'm assistant directing my schools musical for next year and we need to choose a show before the school year is over
Here's what it seems to be coming down to;
-Smokey Joe's Cafe
-High School Musical (I know cheesy. Wasn't my idea)
What would you lovely people suggest?

I don't know Smokey Joe's Cafe...but I'd go with that over High School Musical, lol...

depends what kind of people you have to work with... smokey joe's has a lot of gospelish singing, some great songs that are pretty challenging... judging from the movie high school musical isn't very challenging and is a big chorus show, with a lot of opportunities for dancers and everything...plus high school musical has a ton more characters than smokey joe's, oh and smokey doesn't have a really real story line.

Can you give us more information before asking for our advice? what kind of school? middle? high? college? what type of actors? dancers? more girls than boys? Music Theatre International, (mtishows.com or org or something) has essentially an online quiz style program that suggests shows. you might want to check that out.
i'd say Into The Woods, or the junior version, depending on the age of the cast.
footloose the musical is fun to be in, not a great show, but a lot of fun to do.
and there are always the classics to fall back upon.

It's a high school show, and the cast will probaly be small to medium (but one can only guess). They last musical we did was "A Chorus Line" which was fun but I think we want something with a little less dancing (as one of the choreographers of that show I would have to agree! that was a stressful show)
We always have more girls then boys. We have some pretty good dancers and a few very talented singers.

if you're still picking between either smokey or high school musical than do high school musical...because smokey has virtually no dancing, and challenging singing...

Okay time for an update! We thought of more shows, so heres the list as of now;
-Smokey Joes
- High School Musical
- Grease
- Zombie Prom

It seem that this year we havea thing for 50's musicals!
Anyway, what are y'alls thoughts?

If you only have a few talented singers, then Smokey Joe's is definitely out.

I'm not incredibley familiar with High School Musical, but that would be just a bit ironic, no?

I'm not all that familiar with Zombie Prom, so I can't comment on that...

Grease is pretty easy to do no matter your talent pool, but depends on size...

Speaking of which, what's your idea of a "small to medium" cast?

You can get away with "Guys & Dolls" with passable singers. It's also a lot of fun.

Urinetown.

it's fun
you don't need a large cast
not too much dancing
good parts
etc etc etc

If you have like a really immature crowd or an audience that knows hardly anything about broadway, or if there the complete oppisite of everything I said do Smokey Joes Cafe

My high school has a very tight budget and theatre is the least of their concerns. We did Crazy For You this past year, but there aren't any theatre programs at our school other than the musical we do each year. I am a freshman, but last year they did Grease and it was fantastic, always a fun show to put on.

The course of true love never did run smooth.

BY small to medium cast I'm thinking 10-20 students.
It looks like we might be leaning twards Grease at this point, byt knowing my scholl it could change in like 5 seconds!
I like the idea of doing sweet charity, but I don't know if anyone else would agree with me...
Oh and does anyone know if the right are out for "We Will ROck You" Because we have a big Queen following in our school, and a music teacher who has a thing for rock musicals.

I don't know about right for WWRY, but if Rock musicals are his thing, you can't go wrong with TOMMY or JCS.

looks like we're leaning twards We Will Rock You or Smokey Joe's Cafe! I'm rooting for WWRY, I want to be Scaramoush (sp?)!
