They both came from off-Broadway origins. They both received mixed critical/patron reaction. They both have merits and flaws placing it into a borderline position.
Which show do you prefer? If you had to see one again, which would you see?
My answer is Act I of SPRING AWAKENING and Act II of GREY GARDENS. But honestly...I think I'd have to go with SPRING AWAKENING. Whilst I think GREY GARDENS was more solid, I just wanted to give SPRING AWAKENING another try. I didn't leave the show moved, I left it wanting to be moved. Unfulfilled. And I feel like if I see it again, I will be...(but perhaps not?)
Apples and Oranges, honey.
I Like them both.
But I think GREY GARDENS is more to my taste.
Yes and no, honey. lol
It can certainly be difficult to answer. But if I had to choose between an apple and an orange right now, I'd choose an orange.
Grey Gardens.
I preferred Grey Gardens to Spring Awakening. I went into Spring Awakening having heard one song and knowing the premise, and I was really excited about it, and though I enjoyed it I wasn't particularly moved like I thought I would be. I went into Grey Gardens knowing nothing about it except that Ebersole was supposedly giving a legendary performance, and I left absolutely floored by it and her.
I would like to see both again, but if I get to the city again anytime soon I know it will be Spring Awakening, because no one I know will want to see Grey Gardens.
I liked them both but I pick Spring Awakening
Don't mind Foster. He just likes to see himself post.
Oh and as long as we're comparing apples and oranges, I choose oranges.
I feel like an orange, too.
I like CORN.
So does Jerry.
I changed my mind. Apples. I mean God please just let those apples fall.
Apples are forbidden.
Oh, wait. Wrong show.
Never mind.
Apples are Forbidden.(You cracked me up)
I loved both shows for different reasons.
Christine Ebersole gave one if not the most riveting performance in GG. She moved me twice.
The music in Spring Awakening is a lot of fun. They are such different shows. That being said, I love both very much.
I can't stop listening to Spring Awakening but Ebersole made Grey Gardens for me.
PS Kristin Chenoweth made me smile the most this season in Apple Tree. I love her!
You beat me to it, Andy....
Apples and Kumquats!
I'm seeing Spring Awakening Friday, but I am pretty sure my answer will be Grey Gardens. One of my favorite shows andjust terrific in every way!
I liked Grey Gardens a lot and thought Ebersole was amazing....I LOVED Spring Awakening beyond words!! I'm not really sure how you can compare the two but having to pick one it's w/o a doubt Spring Awakening.
Definitely Spring Awakening. No comparison.
Grey Gardens was a good show, but I don't think I would want to sit through it again right now. I could definitely see Spring Awakening many more times.

is it worth going to see spring awakening if all you can do is sit onstage (i.e., $36 tickets)?
there's no participation involved, is there?
This is like comparing apples to oranges. They're both very different shows.

Loved Spring Awakening but can't comment on Grey Gardens. Seeing it next week however, so I'll let you know. I love the original cast recording though.
It's true, they are totally different shows. Why not love both?

the score for Grey Gardens, as I have said, comes of as apretentious vanity piece to me.. the commercial makes me rollmy eyes every time I hear "another mask for a masquerade around and round I twirl."
I'll take SPRING over Grey.
GREY GARDENS hands down. Best musical since PIAZZA, and before that, who knows.

Never saw the documentary before I saw GREY GARDENS -- and had no interest in it...was so bored...and didn't get Christine's "nuanced" performance...as had no context to put it in...
hands down...
SPRING AWAKENING.
Oh, Grey Gardens. I'm obsessed!
