Well the character I would want for my best friend is the Scarlet Pimpernel. Not the flop guy Sir Percy but the Pimpernel himself. I think he's amazing. You would never know which of his characters would meet you for lunch. Unless you recognized his amazing body. I mean, would he be the pirate or the poet or the prince or a gypsy mopping sweat upon his brow? And we all know he's really a good guy. I know because I read the book and have like three of the CDs.
Rest in peace, Iflitifloat.

I would want Mark or Angel from RENT to be my friends.

Thank you NativeNewYorker! (I'm a native New Yorker too)
when I was ten and "graduating" from elementary school before going into junior high......we always had those little autograph books at graduation time, remember?
my grandparents owned a restaurant in Coney Island and I was there and asking my grandmother to make an entry into my graduation autograph book........
I had already at that tender age begun my fascination with Broadway....my grandmother thought for quite a while and then made the entry:
MAY YOUR LIFE BE AS BRIGHT AS BROADWAY AT NIGHT
in smaller lettering below it she entered the words:
"in 1942"
I recall her remarking on the then current "dismal state of Broadway" (a recurring topic for many of us throughout the years) and putting in the "in 1942" cause she thought the lights on Broadway were much healther in the year of 1942----and in case MAY YOUR LIFE BE AS BRIGHT AS BROADWAY AT NIGHT no longer made sense in the future.
she'd be pleased to know that it does indeed still make sense in the year 2003.
My grandmother was a lead dancer with the NTG Follies and I wish she were still here.

I was going to say Dolly Gallagher Levi, but in a very real sense we already ARE best friends. So let me choose Prof. Henry Higgins. We'd have a grand time sitting at this computer criticizing the spelling and grammatical mistakes that abound in some of the postings. I could only imagine what ol' Henry would say after reading one of Corine's columns! (Although Henry makes a big blooper in MY FAIR LADY. In his very first song he states "By right she should be taken out and HUNG". Grammatically he should say "hanged". Pictures are HUNG. People are HANGED.)

Thanks, Broadwayguy, for clearing that up. I realized my joke was a little too subtle, perhaps a bit obtuse. You made sure that everyone will really GET IT!
