So I got to thinking the other day about songs maybe you feel could stand alone...Let's say, taking a particular song out of context of the show and putting it on the Radio... Which ones do you think would hit the charts? I got to thinking about this because I'm VERY surprised that Fantasia hasn't tried to release a single of "I'm Here". If you You Tube "I'm Here", you'll find SEVERAL people NOT related to the theatre community (it's obvious) that are giving their renditions of the song. They probably have never heard of the Musical TCP, or know that the song is from the show, yet it's popular to them because someone like Fantasia sings it.
You can also choose an artist that you think it would win over millions as well.
My thoughts...
I'm Here (The Color Purple)-Fantasia
What I Did For Love(A Chorus Line)-Christina Aguilera
For the First Time (Tarzan)-Faith Hill and Tim McGraw
Hushabye Mountain(Chitty 2x Bang 2x)-Rufus Wainright
Pretty much any song in Spring Awakening....

If Fantasisa hasn't recorded the song for a separate album, wouldn't it stand to reason that the people singing it on YouTube have heard of The Color Purple?
bwaygal, are you 13?
I HATE with WICKED with a passion but even if I didn't there's not a chance in hell that DEFYING GRAVITY would be a "weekly top 40"..
I was just waiting for someone to pollute this thread with songs by WICKED lol.
The only song(and I agree with you there) I think even would stand alone would be FOR GOOD. Would love to hear a rendtition maybe by Reba McEntire and Kelly Clarkson.

One Song Glory, I was COMPLETELY going to say "Children Will Listen". Way to read my mind. :).
"For Good" || Has been mentioned a few times. With the right voices it might make it to mainstream.
"Someone Like You" || Jekyll and Hyde
"Tell Me on a Sunday" || Song and Dance

I know it's from Wicked, but "As Long As You're Mine" already sounds like a pop song to me.

I think most of the songs from "Songs for a New World" could.
