Posted: 7/28/06 at 10:27pmooh forgot about West Side Story...ok I credit this to the fact that it was one of my introductions to musical theater and that I haven't seen it proffesionally done but I love the movie of West Side Story way more than the stage show. But I have only seen two GOD AWFUL high school versions but I loved the movie and I remember that I would get a four dollars every week when I was a kid for allowance and every week I went to the supermarket and looked for movies to rent and for years on end i always ended up picking the same one- West Side Story from the 99 cent section. It was a ritual and I loved that movie so much and was so happy when my Mom bought it to me for x mas when I was 10.

As for CHICAGO the movie, when I saw the film I thought the choreography was just a really bad, watered down version of the stage revival's choreography. I got the feeling that Marshall didn't want to use the Reinking's "in style of Bob Fosse" choreography, but didn't want, have time or energy (or didn't have the talent, which I DON'T think really was the case) to create a fully original choreography. Instead we got to see a choreography which was very much similar to the revival's choreography but still trying (and failing to succeed) to be 'original'.
As for the age of Roxie, the Real Roxie may have been 23 at the time, but they changed it for Gwen Verdon in the 70s when the show was written. I don't think the age of the actress matters so much, but it did stick out a bit when I saw the role played by an actress in her late 20s/early 30s when she did that Roxie's speech before "Roxie" song - somehow the speech just sounds odd when done by a younger actress.

Well, sant . . . you also have to figure that people weren't living as long in the 20's as today and even at 23-30, people (especially women) had it pretty rough!

Posted: 7/29/06 at 9:01pm"Grease" the movie is superior to the stage production. The movie score, sequence of events, and screenplay are much more effective and sensible.
