Bernadette is really a mixed bag in my opinion. Her performance in Gypsy was brilliant in terms of her acting, but her weak vocals worked only because they made sense within the context of Mama Rose being a sort of "has been" who "never was." That being said, I am sure she and the producers would have been happier if she were actually able to sing the role comfortably. She is really an actress who sings; a very fine actress but her signing has really deteriorated over the years (her R&H album was painful). I think there are many others in her league but lacking her star power, including Donna Murphy, Christine Ebersole, Faith Price (at times) -- all of whom are very competent when it comes to playing an a-typical leading lady (one who is quirky, tragic, or in general not a Julie Andrews type).
